IMPACT & SUSTAINABILITY

Powering more sustainable journeys

How we’re promoting more sustainable travel products across our platform and encouraging travelers to choose them.

At Expedia Group, our purpose is to help travelers explore the world, one journey at a time. We believe that every journey helps people and places thrive, and that better information can help turn that belief into action. Our sustainability ambition is to safeguard the awe-inspiring places that make travel meaningful by making more sustainable choices easier to find, understand, compare, and use. We help travelers choose options that reflect what matters to them, while helping partners showcase their efforts clearly and credibly.

As a marketplace connecting travelers, partners, and destinations, we are building a stronger foundation for more sustainable journeys across the travel experience. In our recent research, which surveyed 7,000 travelers across seven markets, 60% said they consider their environmental impact more now than they did 3–5 years ago, and 94% said they would be willing to travel off-peak if it helped reduce crowding and preserve the local environment. From hotel certifications and sustainability attributes to flight-emissions estimates and electric vehicle options, we aim to bring relevant information into the moments when people plan and book.

By working with partners, certification bodies, data providers, and the wider travel ecosystem, we aim to support healthier destinations, encourage more sustainable options, and align our business and industry with a net-zero future. This work is ongoing, and we are continuing to improve the experiences, expand what is available, and address information gaps across the journey.

How we put this into practice

Information by travel type

We integrate sustainability information into the travel shopping journey so travelers can compare options and make decisions that reflect their priorities.

Hotels

We display more than 90 third-party sustainability certifications and more than 50 sustainability attributes and amenities. Examples include electric vehicle charging, towel and linen reuse, and water-efficient fixtures. Travelers may see this information on Expedia.com, Hotels.com, supported business-to-business experiences, or a property’s About page where the platform supports it.

For lodging, our certification data is guided by the Travalyst Certifications Initiative and supplied through BeCause. Where the Sustainability certifications filter is available, properties that display through the filter have a qualifying third-party certification and relevant practices, features, or programs aligned with or approved by that certification scheme.

Availability varies by market, brand, supplier participation, available data, and integration. A certification, attribute, or amenity describes a defined credential or practice; it does not mean that an entire property or stay is sustainable.

Flights

On Expedia.com in the U.S., some flight listings display whether estimated emissions are below, average, or above average compared with typical emissions for similar flights on the same route. Expedia Group uses the open-source Travel Impact Model (TIM), which estimates per-passenger emissions using factors such as origin, destination, aircraft type, cabin, seating configuration, and average passenger load.

  • “Below average” indicates an estimate at least 5% lower than typical for the same route
  • “Above average” indicates at least 5% higher than typical for the same route
  • Results within that range are labeled “Average.”

The estimates are not a complete measure of a flight’s climate impact and may not currently account for effects such as contrails or sustainable aviation fuel. Flight-emissions labels are different than lower-emissions flight filters and are not a complete measure of a flight’s climate impact. Availability and display are subject to change as we update the experience, data sources, and methodology.

Vacation rentals

Hosts and property managers can provide information about sustainability related amenities and property details through supported platform integrations, and this information appears on vacation-rental property pages.

Third-party sustainability certifications for vacation rentals are currently limited, although some hosts have achieved them, and these certifications may be displayed for vacation rentals on Expedia.com and Hotels.com. Availability varies by property, property manager, market, and integration.

Cars

Electric vehicle and hybrid vehicle options, labels, and filters are available on platforms offering vehicle rentals. Their availability depends on vehicle inventory and the booking experience.

Vehicle details are supplied through rental-car inventory and partner integrations. Availability varies by market, rental supplier, and vehicle inventory.

Activities

For activities, sustainability information may be included based on what is relevant to each experience. These details are provided by activity partners.

Availability varies by activity, market, partner participation, available data, and platform support. We do not apply a single sustainability experience to every activity; information is evaluated and displayed based on the offering and the data available.

Business-to-business and partner distribution

Partners and travelers may see lodging sustainability attributes and third-party lodging certifications, electric and hybrid vehicle options, and electric vehicle charging filters for lodging through partner applications, business-to-business experiences, APIs, or other supported integrations.

This information may not appear directly on an Expedia Group consumer site. Availability depends on the partner’s integration, supported data fields, data ownership, and refresh process.

These experiences are designed to make specific information more visible and useful. A label, filter, attribute, or certification describes a defined practice or credential; it does not mean that an entire trip, property, vehicle, activity, or product is sustainable.

Building a stronger foundation for credible information

Travelers need sustainability information they can understand and trust. We use recognized certification programs, partner-provided information, third-party data, and defined calculations and methodologies to help make that information clearer.

We aim to explain where information comes from, what it covers, how current it is, and any limitations.

Important information

Feature and content availability varies by brand, market, point of sale, inventory, supplier participation, data coverage, and integration. A capability may be available in one consumer experience, business-to-business offering, API, or partner workflow without being available across all Expedia Group experiences.

Expedia Group provides the platform and marketplace connection. Partners and certification bodies remain responsible for the underlying practices and supporting evidence represented in sustainability information.

Sustainability information is subject to change as partners, certification bodies, data providers, standards, and regulations evolve, and we continue to refine how information is sourced, governed, displayed, and maintained over time.
