MARKETPLACE POLICIES

California Cleaning Tasks Policy

This policy applies to any vacation rental in California booked on any Expedia Group brand.

Summary

Vacation rental hosts with properties in California must list all of their required cleaning tasks and disclose whether not completing them may lead to a negative guest review. This policy explains where cleaning tasks must be entered and which types of tasks hosts may require guests to complete.

Where to list cleaning tasks

Hosts must enter cleaning tasks in the listing’s check-out instructions or in a similarly labeled cleaning tasks field in connectivity software. Tasks mentioned anywhere else in the listing are not mandatory to complete. For multi-unit properties, hosts must list the required tasks separately for each individual unit.

Types of cleaning tasks that are allowed

Hosts may only require cleaning tasks that are reasonable for guests to complete. These tasks should:

  • Only take a few minutes each to complete.
  • Require minimal tools or equipment, which are already in the home.
  • Not require specialized knowledge.
  • Relate directly to the guest’s use of the property, such as cleaning dishes or removing bedding.

Examples include:

  • Removing trash from inside the home
  • Loading the dishwasher
  • Stripping beds
  • Removing personal items and food
  • Rolling away extra beds

Types of cleaning tasks that are not allowed

Hosts cannot require cleaning tasks that are intended for general property upkeep or maintenance.

Examples include:

  • Mowing the lawn
  • Deep cleaning major appliances, such as the stovetop or oven
  • Cleaning windows
  • Shoveling the driveway
  • Dusting and wiping all surfaces
  • Deep cleaning bathrooms

When guests do not complete cleaning tasks

If hosts want the option to leave a negative guest review for incomplete cleaning tasks, they must disclose this consequence in the listing so that it is visible to the guest before they book.

Hosts cannot charge guests a financial penalty or file a damage protection claim for incomplete cleaning tasks.

Enforcement

We may send hosts a correction request if their listing does not comply with this policy. If the listing is not corrected, we may remove non-compliant cleaning tasks and notify the host. Hosts may be suspended for continued or repeated violation of this policy.

Guests may be entitled to reimbursement from hosts for cleaning fees that were collected out of compliance with this policy.
