MARKETPLACE POLICIES

Host Fees & Taxes Transparency Policy

This policy applies to any Vrbo vacation rental booked on any Expedia Group brand.

Summary

Vrbo requires hosts to enter all fees and taxes in the correct fields in the Vrbo Dashboard or the host’s connectivity software, so guests see an accurate total price before they book. Hosts may only charge fees and taxes that are clearly and accurately shown in the listing at the time of booking.

Setting fair and competitive base prices and fees for the listing

The base price is the price of the stay before any fees and taxes are added. Hosts must set fair base prices and fees for each listing that are competitive with other marketplaces, to the extent allowed by law.

Types of fees hosts may charge and where to enter them

Hosts must enter all fees in the appropriate fields in the Vrbo Dashboard or in connectivity software. Fees may be charged at the time of booking or at the time of stay.  Fees may either be mandatory fixed fees, mandatory usage-based fees or optional fees.

1. Mandatory fixed fees are charges that guests must always pay as part of their reservation and can be calculated at the time of booking (for example, cleaning fees, resort access fees, administrative fees, and pet fees when the guest brings a pet). The total amount of mandatory fixed fees must not exceed the base price.

How to enter them:

  • Enter these fees in the appropriate mandatory fixed fee fields in the Vrbo dashboard or in connectivity software.  Hosts may choose to provide more details on mandatory fixed fees in the property description, such as when they need to be paid.  However, a host will not be allowed to charge any mandatory fixed fees that are only entered in the property description.

2. Mandatory usage-based fees are charges for utilities or services that depend on how much a guest uses them during a stay and cannot be fully calculated at the time of booking (for example, electricity charged by actual use).

How to enter them:

  • If there are mandatory usage‑based fee fields in the Vrbo dashboard or in connectivity software, enter these fees in those fields.
  • If those fields are not available for the host’s account type, either:
    • Build the expected amount into the base price, or
    • Enter the expected amount as a mandatory fixed fee in the appropriate field.
  • Hosts may choose to provide more details on mandatory usage-based fees in the property description, such as when they need to be paid.  However, a host will not be allowed to charge any mandatory usage-based fees that are only entered in the property description.

3. Optional fees are charges for extra features or services that guests may choose to add to their stay (for example, optional parking, heated pool or hot tub access, streaming services, or premium Wi-Fi). These fees are not mandatory and can vary based on a guest’s usage.

How to enter them:

  • Where optional fee fields are available in the Vrbo dashboard or in connectivity software, enter these fees in those fields.
  • If no dedicated optional fee fields are available, describe optional fees clearly in the property description, including the amount and when they apply.

Taxes hosts may collect and where to enter them

Hosts must enter all government-imposed taxes and charges that guests must pay for their stay in the appropriate fields in the Vrbo Dashboard or in connectivity software.  Taxes may be charged at the time of booking or at the time of stay.

How to enter them:

  • Enter taxes in the appropriate tax fields in the Vrbo dashboard or in connectivity software. Hosts may choose to provide more details on taxes in the property description, such as when they need to be paid.  However, a host will not be allowed to collect any taxes that are only entered in the property description.
